This full-day tour takes you to the unique rock tombs of Lycia along the Turquoise Coast. You will stop off to visit Santa Claus’s church and get to swim in the sea around Kekova Island.
The Lycia rock tombs and amphitheatre at Myra are an exceptional sight and not to be missed. Now called Demre, the town is best known as the place where Santa Claus brought joy to the world under his other name of St. Nicholas. The saint lived and worked in Myra and an 11th-Century church once held his earthly remains. He was born in nearby Patara, before becoming a priest, rising to the rank of bishop and conducting much of his good work in the Roman town of Myra, a name derived from myrrh.
Legend has it that he would drop small bags of gold coins down the chimneys of houses of poor girls who were old enough to marry but had no dowry. Sanctified for his good works, he became the patron saint of virgins, sailors, children, pawnbrokers and Holy Russia.
Today the Church of St. Nicholas is Demre's most visited site but there are other things to see in this lovely coastal Mediterranean town. About 2 kilometres inland are the ruins of Roman Myra, with a well-preserved theatre and impressive rock-hewn tombs.
Your tour will also cruise the extraordinary underwater ruins of the sunken city of Simena. You will take a boat trip to Kekova Island with breaks to snorkel and swim. Now known as Kaleköy, it is dominated by a Byzantine church and will be just one of the many highlights of this full-day tour.
Early morning departure from hotels and Drive is approximately 165 kilometres.
Please bring towel, sun lotion and your own snorkel gear.
The itineraries might be altered slightly by the guide for seasonal or other reasons. Visits to some museums or ancient ruins may not be possible due to renovation work. In the very hot months of July and August, breaks and visits to open-air museums and ancient ruins may be shorter than planned.
